Reading a Honda model code
BF is the four stroke line and the number is the horsepower. After that, L is a twenty inch long shaft and X a twenty five inch extra long, R denotes remote steering, H a tiller handle, and T power trim and tilt. A BF150AKLA is therefore a 150 in long shaft remote form. Match the shaft letter to your measured transom height.
Automotive derived powerheads
Honda builds its outboard powerheads from automotive engine designs, which is why the mid range runs a programmed fuel injection system and variable valve timing on some models. The practical effect is a broad torque curve low down, which suits a heavy hull getting onto the plane more than it suits a light hull chasing top speed.
Charging and accessory load
Honda alternator output runs high for the horsepower, up to 90 amps on the V6 models, and several models offer an increased charging option. If you run a large electronics package or charge a trolling motor from the engine, check the amp figure in the specification table before you order.

New Honda outboards carry a five year factory limited warranty for recreational use, the longest standard cover in the range we list, registered in your name on the day of dispatch. No extension is required or offered. Warranty work is carried out at any authorized Honda Marine dealer in the United States.

Is the Honda warranty really five years?
Yes, for private recreational use, registered in your name at dispatch. Commercial use is one year. That is the standard cover, not a promotion, which is why no extension is sold.
Do Honda engines ship with controls?
Remote models ship without a control box or cables. Send us the boat and we will list the correct kit, cable lengths and rigging tube on the quote.
Are Honda outboards heavier than the alternatives?
Slightly, in the mid range, because of the automotive derived block. On a transom already rated for the horsepower it rarely matters, but tell us the boat if you are close to the rating and we will check.
Can a Honda be fitted as a kicker alongside a main engine?
Yes. The BF5 through BF20 are commonly rigged as kickers. Tell us the main engine and the bracket and we will confirm shaft length and the correct linkage.
