Yamaha 20 HP Outboard Motors

Yamaha is the volume choice in the United States and the easiest range to get serviced anywhere on the coast. A Yamaha at 20 horsepower suits inflatables, small skiffs and utility hulls.

Buying a Yamaha 20hp

Expect 48 to 55 kg, 106 to 121 lb dry, short or long shaft, electric start common, tiller with remote available, and external tank. Shaft length is built into the model code: L is a twenty inch long shaft, X a twenty five inch extra long, and neither means a fifteen inch short shaft.

We do not hold a Yamaha at this size on the floor, but the engine below can be sourced and delivered in seven to fourteen days.

Buying used at this size, a 20 is often a 15 with a different carburettor or map, so a 15 in better condition can be the smarter purchase.

The one listed here is $2,250. Freight, controls and a propeller are quoted separately.

Common questions

What size boat does a 20hp outboard suit?

It suits inflatables, small skiffs and utility hulls. Always check the capacity plate at your transom first, since that gives the maximum the hull is rated for and it is illegal as well as unwise to exceed it.

How much does a 20hp outboard weigh?

Typically 48 to 55 kg, 106 to 121 lb. That figure matters more than most buyers expect: it decides whether you can lift the engine alone, and whether your transom bracket is rated for it.

Which shaft length do I need?

Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. Fitted right, the anti ventilation plate finishes level with the hull bottom. Send us a photograph with a tape measure in frame if you are unsure.

Does the price include controls and a propeller?

Remote steering engines are supplied without a control box or cables unless you add them, and engines from 40hp up ship without a propeller so it can be pitched to your hull. Both can go in the same crate, so there is no second freight charge.

How does it get to me?

Crated and shipped to all 48 states. Freight is priced from your zip code against the destination zone, and the exact figure is shown at checkout before you pay. Ask for a written quote first if you would rather see it in an email.
