Used Yamaha 25HP Outboard for Sale
Buy a used Yamaha 25HP two stroke outboard for sale online, a 1997 engine on a 20 inch long shaft with electric start and remote steering. Remote steering at 25 horsepower is less common than tiller and more useful than people expect: if your boat has a console, this is the engine that suits it, and it means you sit forward out of the weather rather than at the stern holding an arm. Two strokes at this size are light, simple and cheap to repair, which on a small aluminum hull is a real advantage. Order it from this page, or ask us for compression figures and photographs of whatever you want to see first.
Supplied with
- Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
- Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
- Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
- Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
- First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil
Not sure on shaft length
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.
Remote steering on a 25HP outboard
Most 25s are tiller engines, so a remote steering one is worth pointing out.
It means the boat has a console, or can have one, and you sit forward with a wheel and a throttle rather than at the transom with the engine in your hand. On anything more than a short run that is a different experience, particularly in cold or wet weather.
It also frees the stern. On a small fishing boat that is usable space rather than somewhere the driver has to sit.
What comes with it is a control box, cables and a harness, which have to match. Ask what this listing includes before you order, because it changes the real cost more than anything else here.

Buying a small two stroke
Two strokes at this size are about as simple as marine engines get, which makes them a low risk used buy if the compression is right.
Check compression on both cylinders and make sure the readings are close to each other. Check whether the oil injection works or it has been converted to premix. Check the gear oil for water and the prop shaft for line damage.
They are lighter than four strokes at the same output, which on a small aluminum boat changes how the hull sits and planes.

What a 25HP outboard suits
Jon boats, small aluminum fishing hulls, skiffs and inflatables. It will plane a small boat with two people aboard, which a 15 usually will not.
A 20 inch long shaft suits a standard transom. Many jon boats take 15 inches, so measure from the top of the transom straight down to the hull bottom at the centerline before ordering.
Running a Yamaha 25HP two stroke
If you have not owned a two stroke before, three habits keep one alive and none of them is difficult.
Fuel first. Whether it mixes by hand or injects oil, get that right and keep the ratio consistent. Running lean on oil is how these engines are destroyed, and it is not recoverable.
Then storage. Stale fuel is as bad for a two stroke as for anything else, so stabilise it or run the tank down before the boat sits.
Then the water pump. A two stroke gives less warning than a four stroke before overheating does damage, so change the impeller on a schedule rather than waiting for the telltale to weaken.
Do those three and a small two stroke will outlast a lot of newer engines.
Frequently asked questions
Is remote steering unusual on a 25HP outboard?
Less common than tiller, yes. It suits boats with a console, where you sit forward out of the weather and the stern stays clear. Tiller suits open boats where the deck matters more.
Does this Yamaha 25 come with controls?
Ask before ordering. Remote engines need a control box, cables and a harness, and whether they are included changes the real cost considerably. We confirm it in writing.
Are small two strokes worth buying?
For light use, often yes. They are lighter, simpler and cheaper than four strokes at the same output, and the lighter weight helps on a small aluminum hull.
What should I check on a used Yamaha 25HP two stroke?
Compression on both cylinders and how close the readings are, whether oil injection works or it runs on premix, the gear oil for water, and the prop shaft for line damage.
What size boat takes a 25HP outboard?
Jon boats, small aluminum fishing hulls, skiffs and inflatables. It will plane a small boat with two aboard. Check your capacity plate before ordering.
