Used Johnson 9.9HP Outboard for Sale
Buy a used Johnson 9.9HP outboard for sale online, a 1988 engine on a 15 inch short shaft with tiller steering and manual pull start. Nine point nine horsepower is the size that exists because of regulation as much as engineering: it is the most power you can run on many restricted waters and the largest engine many small boat licences allow. That makes a 9.9 the single most useful size in the small outboard market, and a Johnson from this era is about the cheapest way to own one that still runs properly. Order it from this page, or ask us for compression figures and photographs of anything you want to see before you decide.
Supplied with
- Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
- Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
- Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
- Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
- First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil
Not sure on shaft length
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a short shaft, 15in.
Why 9.9HP is the size everyone wants
It is not a coincidence that so many outboards are rated exactly 9.9 horsepower rather than 10.
Plenty of inland waters cap engine power at 10 horsepower, and plenty of small boat licensing and insurance thresholds sit at the same number. A 9.9 slips under all of it while giving you as much as the rules allow.
The practical result is that 9.9s hold value, sell quickly and are worth looking for used. A running one at this price is a genuine bargain rather than a compromise.

Buying a 1988 outboard: what actually matters
An engine this old is judged on condition and parts, not on year. A well kept 1988 outboard that was stored dry and serviced runs better than a neglected one from 2005.
Compression is the number that decides it, and we record it before listing. Ask for the figures.
Beyond that: fuel system condition, gear oil clarity, prop shaft straightness and how it was stored. Small engines die of sitting, so storage history tells you more than an hour meter would.
What a 9.9HP outboard is for
Jon boats, small aluminum hulls, dinghies, sailboat auxiliaries and as a kicker motor on a larger boat for trolling.
The kicker role is worth mentioning: a 9.9 on the transom of a bigger boat gives you a get home engine and a trolling speed that the main motor cannot hold. A 15 inch short shaft suits jon boats and small tenders; measure before you order.
Johnson 9.9HP parts: what is still available
The honest picture on Johnson parts, since the brand stopped being made and that is what everyone wants to know.
For common service items on common models, availability is good. Johnson and Evinrude shared components for decades, so a huge amount cross references between the two lines, and the aftermarket for both is deep.
Water pump kits, impellers, plugs, gaskets, fuel components and anodes are generally straightforward. Cosmetic parts and model specific electronics are harder, and can be genuinely difficult on unusual models.
So the sensible approach is to ask about the specific parts you care about before buying rather than assume either way.
Tell us what you are worried about on this engine and we will check availability before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
Why are so many outboards 9.9HP and not 10?
Because many inland waters cap engine power at 10 horsepower, and various licensing and insurance thresholds sit at the same number. A 9.9 gives you the most power the rules allow.
Is a 1988 outboard too old to buy?
Not if the compression is good and it was stored properly. At this age condition and parts availability decide the value, not the year on the cowling.
Can I still get Johnson parts?
For common models, yes. The aftermarket is deep and components were shared with Evinrude for decades. Ask us about this specific engine before you buy.
Can a Johnson 9.9HP be used as a kicker motor?
A small outboard mounted alongside a larger one, used for trolling at slow speeds and as a get home engine if the main motor stops. A 9.9 is the classic size for it.
Will this 15 inch Johnson 9.9HP fit my boat?
Only if the transom measures about 15 inches from the top down to the hull bottom at the centerline. Jon boats often do; sailboat tenders usually need 20. Send the measurement and we will confirm.

Shipping and crating
The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.
Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.
Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.
| Destination zone | Freight on this engine | Transit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard freight | $100 | About a week |
| Express freight | $250 | 1 to 3 days |
