Used Johnson 7.5HP Two Stroke Outboard for Sale

Buy a used Johnson 7.5HP outboard for sale online, a two stroke tiller engine on a 15 inch short shaft with manual pull start. Seven and a half horsepower is an unusual rating now and a useful one: more than a 5 for pushing against a current or a headwind, lighter and cheaper than a 9.9, and still comfortably a one person lift. For a tender, a small skiff or an inflatable it is often exactly the right amount of engine. This is an older Johnson two stroke twin, the simplest kind of outboard there is and the reason these keep running. Order this Johnson 7.5HP outboard from the page, or ask us for compression figures and photographs of anything you want to see.

Supplied with

  • Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
  • Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
  • Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
  • Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
  • First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil

Not sure on shaft length

Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a short shaft, 15in.

Buy a Johnson 7.5HP outboard: why this size is worth finding

The small outboard market has standardized on 2.5, 5, 6, 9.9 and 15 horsepower, which makes a Johnson 7.5HP outboard look like an odd rating. It is not.

Seven and a half horsepower gives you meaningful reserve over a 5 for punching into a current, a chop or a headwind with two people aboard, which is exactly where small engines get found out.

It stays under the weight at which a small outboard becomes a two person lift, and it avoids the price step that comes with a 9.9.

If your boat is a tender that occasionally has to work rather than just potter, a used Johnson 7.5HP is a sensible size to look for, and they stay cheap because almost nobody shops the rating by name.

Why a Johnson two stroke outboard is easy to live with

There is very little in a Johnson two stroke outboard of this era to go wrong, and that is the whole argument for buying one.

No camshaft, no valves, no timing belt and no oil to change. Fuel and oil are mixed, ignition is a magneto behind the flywheel, and the carburetor is a single simple casting. A competent owner can service the entire engine with hand tools.

That also makes diagnosis quick. Compression, spark and fuel cover almost every fault an engine like this develops, and all three are testable in minutes rather than an afternoon.

Parts are not the problem people expect either. Johnson and Evinrude shared components for decades under Outboard Marine Corporation, so the aftermarket covers both lines and small engine parts stay easy to find.

The rest of the range is on Johnson outboard motors, and the two stroke stock across every brand is on 2 stroke outboard motors.

What boats a Johnson 7.5HP outboard suits

Tenders, small skiffs, inflatables and light jon boats. A 15 inch short shaft points at a low transom, which most inflatables and small tenders have.

Measure from the top of the transom straight down to the hull bottom at the centerline before you order a used Johnson 7.5HP outboard. Fifteen inches is a short shaft, twenty is a long shaft, and getting it wrong is the most common mistake made in buying a small outboard.

Sailboat tenders usually want 20 inches instead, because a sailboat pitches at anchor and a short propeller lifts clear of the water. There is a guide on long shaft outboard motors if you are unsure.

If you want a tiller engine of a similar size with electric start, the tiller outboard motors page carries the current stock.

Buy a Johnson 7.5HP outboard online and have it shipped

One advantage of buying a Johnson 7.5HP outboard is that freight is genuinely cheap at this size, which makes ordering online sensible rather than a compromise.

An engine of this weight ships without the crated pallet a full size outboard needs. Standard freight is a flat one hundred dollars to anywhere in the lower 48 and express is two hundred and fifty, so the delivered cost is the price on this page plus a number you already know before you start.

It arrives in a condition you can handle alone, rather than needing help at the end of the drive.

That also means it is worth buying the right engine rather than the nearest one. At this size distance costs very little, and a used Johnson 7.5HP outboard in the condition you want is worth waiting a few days for.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 7.5HP Johnson outboard an odd size to buy?

It is uncommon now but useful. A Johnson 7.5HP outboard gives real reserve over a 5 for currents and headwinds while staying a one person lift and avoiding the price step up to a 9.9.

Is the Johnson 7.5HP a two stroke or a four stroke?

A two stroke. This engine is a twin cylinder two stroke with magneto ignition and no valve train, which is why there is no oil to change and why servicing it is straightforward.

Can you still get Johnson outboard parts?

For common models, yes. Johnson and Evinrude shared components for decades under Outboard Marine Corporation, so the aftermarket covers both lines and small engine parts stay easy to find.

What boats take a Johnson 7.5HP outboard?

Tenders, small skiffs, inflatables and light jon boats, particularly where the boat has to push against a current or a headwind with two people aboard.

Does this Johnson 7.5HP outboard come in a long shaft?

This one is a 15 inch short shaft, which suits most inflatables and small tenders. Sailboat tenders usually want 20 inches. Measure your transom before ordering and we will confirm the fit.
