Used 2016 Yamaha high thrust 9.9HP Outboard for Sale

Buy a used Yamaha 9.9HP high thrust outboard for sale online, a 2016 four stroke on a 20 inch long shaft with tiller steering and manual start. High thrust is not marketing: it is a different gearcase and a different propeller, built to push weight slowly rather than to move a light boat quickly. On a sailboat, a pontoon or a heavy displacement hull, a high thrust 9.9 will do work that an ordinary 9.9 cannot. If you have tried a standard small outboard on a heavy boat and been disappointed, this is the fix. Order it from this page, or ask us for compression figures and photographs of the gearcase and propeller before you decide.

Supplied with

  • Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
  • Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
  • Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
  • Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
  • First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil

Not sure on shaft length

Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.

What high thrust actually means

Two things change, and they change the engine considerably more than the name suggests.

The gear ratio is lower, so the propeller turns more slowly for the same engine speed. And the propeller itself has more blade area and less pitch, so it grips more water per turn.

The result is more push at low speed and much less at the top end. A high thrust 9.9 will move a heavy pontoon or a displacement sailboat against wind and current where a standard 9.9 simply spins.

What you give up is top speed on a light boat. On a dinghy this engine is slower than an ordinary one, which is exactly the wrong trade. Buy it for weight, not for speed.

What boats want a high thrust 9.9

Sailboats to about 25 feet, small pontoons, heavy displacement hulls and anything that has to push against current or wind rather than plane.

It is also the preferred kicker on larger boats, because trolling is exactly the low speed, high load job the gearcase was designed for.

A 20 inch long shaft suits sailboat transoms, pontoon brackets and kicker mounts, all of which sit higher than a jon boat transom.

New or used high thrust

We hold both. This 2016 used engine and a new Yamaha 9.9 high thrust, and they are priced closer together than you might expect.

The used one is the cheaper engine. The new one comes with factory warranty registered in your name and no storage history to investigate, which on a small four stroke is the main risk.

Tell us the boat and we will tell you which makes sense rather than steering you to either.

High thrust as a kicker motor

A large share of high thrust 9.9s are not the main engine on anything. They hang alongside a bigger outboard on a larger boat, and that is a job this gearing suits exactly.

Trolling is low speed under load, which is where a high thrust propeller works and a standard one flails. Holding a steady slow speed against wind and current is precisely what the gearing was designed for.

The second job is getting home. A kicker that will push a loaded boat against a chop is worth the transom space on any water you would not want to be stranded on.

A 20 inch shaft suits most kicker brackets, which mount higher than the main engine. Check yours before ordering and send us the measurement.

Frequently asked questions

What is a high thrust outboard?

One with a lower gear ratio and a larger, lower pitch propeller. It turns the prop more slowly and grips more water, giving more push at low speed and less top end. Built for heavy boats, not fast ones.

Do I need high thrust for a sailboat?

If the boat is heavy or you push against current and wind, yes. A standard small outboard spins where a high thrust one drives. For a light dinghy, high thrust is the wrong choice.

Is a high thrust outboard slower?

On a light boat, yes, noticeably. The gearing trades top speed for low speed thrust. On a heavy displacement hull it is faster in practice because it can actually move the boat.

Can I use a high thrust 9.9 as a kicker?

It is the preferred choice. Trolling is a low speed, high load job, which is exactly what the gearcase and propeller were designed for.

Should I buy the new or the used high thrust?

The used one costs less. The new one carries factory warranty and no storage history to worry about, which on a small four stroke is the main risk. Tell us the boat and we will advise.

Shipping and crating

The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.

Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.

Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.

Warranty

This used Yamaha is compression tested, run on the dyno and listed with its hour count and service history. It carries a ninety day parts and labor warranty from us unless the balance of factory cover runs longer.

Warranty work can be carried out at any authorized Yamaha dealer in the United States. You are not tied to us for servicing, and buying online does not shorten or void the factory cover.

The serial number on this listing, 6EK-3686992, is the unit that ships to you. It appears on your invoice and on the warranty registration.

3 years, extendable to 5 years

Extended service cover can be added within the first year. Ask the sales desk to add it to your invoice.
