New Mercury 8HP Outboard for Sale

Buy a new Mercury 8HP four stroke outboard online, on a 20 inch long shaft with tiller steering and manual pull start. Eight horsepower sits in the useful gap between a 6, which can struggle against wind and current, and a 9.9, which costs more and weighs more. For a tender, a small skiff or a sailboat auxiliary it is often exactly right, and buying new at this size means factory warranty and no history to investigate on an engine that will probably outlive the boat. Order this new Mercury 8HP outboard from the page, or send us the transom measurement and the boat and we will confirm the fit before you pay.

Supplied with

  • Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
  • Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
  • Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
  • Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
  • First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil

Not sure on shaft length

Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.

Buy a new 8HP outboard: why new makes sense at this size

Small outboards are the one size where buying new is easy to justify, and it is not about the warranty.

It is that small engines are killed by neglect, and a used one carries an unknown history of stale fuel, skipped services and winters spent full of water. There is no hour meter on most of them to tell you anything.

New removes all of that for a price that, at 8 horsepower, is not a great deal more than a good used one. You get factory cover registered in your name and a clean start on maintenance.

If you would rather have the used price, we stock plenty of small engines. This is simply the honest case for the other choice.

Why choose 8HP over a 6 or a 9.9

A 6 is lighter and cheaper and fine on flat water with one person aboard. It runs out of ideas against a current or a headwind with two.

A 9.9 gives you more again, and often electric start as an option, but it costs more, weighs more and in many inland waters sits right at the regulatory cap.

Eight is the middle. Meaningful reserve over a 6, comfortably a one person lift, and cheaper than a 9.9. For a tender that occasionally has to work, it is the sensible size.

Compare against the Yamaha 9.9 high thrust if you want more push at low speed.

Why this Mercury 8HP is a long shaft

This one is a 20 inch long shaft, which suits sailboat tenders, dinghies used in open water and boats with a higher transom.

Many inflatables and small tenders take 15 inches instead. Measure from the top of the transom straight down to the hull bottom at the centerline before ordering, and see portable outboard motors for the rest of the small range.

Carrying and storing a Mercury 8HP

At 8 horsepower the engine spends as much time off the boat as on it, so how it handles on land matters.

It is a one person lift for most people over a short distance, which is the practical ceiling before a second pair of hands or a trolley becomes necessary.

Store it upright on a stand or a transom bracket rather than laid on its side, because oil finds its way into places it should not when a four stroke is put down flat.

Run the fuel out or stabilise it before it sits, which is the single habit that decides whether a small engine starts next season.

A proper cover keeps dust and damp off the powerhead, and on an engine kept in a garage for eight months of the year that is worth the small cost.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy a new Mercury 8HP or a used one?

At this size, often yes. Small engines are killed by neglect and most have no hour meter, so a used one carries an unknown history. New removes that for a price that is not far off a good used engine.

Should I buy 6HP, 8HP or 9.9HP?

A 6 is fine on flat water with one aboard. An 8 gives real reserve against wind and current while staying a one person lift. A 9.9 gives more again but costs and weighs more, and often sits at the regulatory cap inland.

What boats take an 8HP outboard?

Tenders, dinghies, small skiffs and sailboat auxiliaries. Enough to push against a current with two people aboard, light enough to carry.

Does this Mercury 8HP have electric start?

No, it is manual recoil start. At 8 horsepower a pull start is an easy swing for most people, and it saves the weight and cost of a battery on board.

Mercury 8HP long shaft or short shaft for a dinghy?

This is the 20 inch long shaft, which suits sailboat tenders and open water use. Many inflatables take 15 inches. Measure the transom before ordering and send us the figure.

Shipping and crating

The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.

Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.

Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.

Warranty

New Mercury outboards carry the full 3 years Mercury limited warranty for private recreational use, 1 year for commercial use. We register the warranty in your name on the day of dispatch and the certificate ships inside the crate.

Warranty work can be carried out at any authorized Mercury dealer in the United States. You are not tied to us for servicing, and buying online does not shorten or void the factory cover.

The serial number on this listing, 2B4-3807056, is the unit that ships to you. It appears on your invoice and on the warranty registration.

3 years, extendable to 8 years

Extended service cover can be added within the first year. Ask the sales desk to add it to your invoice.
