Johnson outboards
Johnson 6 HP Outboard Motors
Johnson outboards ended with the OMC collapse in 2001, after which BRP kept the name on rebadged Suzuki four strokes until 2007. A Johnson at 6 horsepower suits jon boats, dinghies and small skiffs.
Buying a Johnson 6hp
Expect 25 to 27 kg, 55 to 60 lb dry, short or long shaft, manual start, tiller, and integral, external tank commonly fitted. A pre 2001 Johnson is an OMC two stroke and shares most parts with the equivalent Evinrude. A 2002 to 2007 Johnson four stroke is a Suzuki underneath, which makes parts easier.
We do not hold a Johnson at this size on the floor, but the engines below can be sourced and delivered in seven to fourteen days.
Buying used at this size, the 6hp is usually the same block as the 4 and 5, so a well kept 6 is often the better buy of the three.
Listed prices on this page run from $850 to $995. Freight, controls and a propeller are quoted separately.
Common questions
What size boat does a 6hp outboard suit?
It suits jon boats, dinghies and small skiffs. Always check the capacity plate at your transom first, since that gives the maximum the hull is rated for and it is illegal as well as unwise to exceed it.
How much does a 6hp outboard weigh?
Typically 25 to 27 kg, 55 to 60 lb. That figure matters more than most buyers expect: it decides whether you can lift the engine alone, and whether your transom bracket is rated for it.
Which shaft length do I need?
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. Fitted right, the anti ventilation plate finishes level with the hull bottom. Send us a photograph with a tape measure in frame if you are unsure.
Can I still get parts for a 6hp outboard?
A pre 2001 Johnson is an OMC two stroke and shares most parts with the equivalent Evinrude. A 2002 to 2007 Johnson four stroke is a Suzuki underneath, which makes parts easier.
