Used Johnson GT 150HP Outboard for Sale
Buy a used Johnson 150HP two stroke outboard for sale online, a 1985 GT on a 20 inch long shaft with electric start, remote steering and power trim and tilt. This is the cheapest 150 horsepower on the site by a wide margin, and the reason is straightforward: it is a forty year old two stroke from a brand that no longer exists. What you get for accepting that is a lot of power for very little money, in an engine simple enough that any mechanic can work on it. What you have to check is compression, and we have the figures. Order it from the page, or ask us for photographs of anything you want to see first.
Supplied with
- Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
- Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
- Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
- Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
- First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil
Not sure on shaft length
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.
The cheapest 150HP outboard for sale here, and why
Three things set this price, and none of them is a hidden fault.
It is a two stroke, which the market has moved away from on fuel and emissions. It is forty years old. And it wears a badge that stopped being made, so there is no brand premium propping it up.
Against that, a big two stroke is a genuinely simple machine: no valve train, no cam, no complex electronics. When something goes wrong it is usually cheap to put right, and anyone can diagnose it.
This is an engine for a boat that gets used on weekends and does not need to be pretty. For that job, the value is real.

What to check on a used Johnson 150HP two stroke
The checks on a large two stroke are different from a four stroke and compression carries almost all the weight.
- Compression on every cylinder, and the numbers should be close to each other. A single low cylinder is the expensive fault.
- Whether oil injection works or it has been converted to premix. Either is workable, but you need to know which you are buying.
- Gear oil for water, which means seals.
- Whether it smokes heavily once warm, which points at rings rather than normal two stroke behaviour.
- The trim rams and midsection, where forty years of weather shows.
We record compression before listing. Ask for the figures and for photographs of any area, and we will send both.
Johnson GT 150 running costs
Be realistic about fuel. A two stroke at this output burns considerably more than a modern four stroke doing the same work, and if you run long hours that difference will outweigh what you saved buying it.
For a boat used at weekends on a lake or a river, it will not. That is the calculation to make before you order.
More at this price point on 2-stroke outboard motors and Johnson outboard motors.
Where an older Johnson two stroke can be run
Before buying an engine of this age, check the rules where you actually boat, because they vary and they matter.
Some lakes and reservoirs restrict older carburetted two strokes on emissions grounds. Others have no restriction at all. It is set locally rather than nationally, so the only reliable answer comes from the water authority for the water you use.
It is worth five minutes before you commit. An engine that cannot legally run where you keep the boat is not a bargain at any price.
For coastal and most river use there is generally no issue. For inland lakes, particularly drinking water reservoirs, check first.
We would rather you asked that question now than discovered it after the engine is on the transom.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 1985 outboard worth buying?
If the compression is even and good, and you accept two stroke fuel consumption, it can be excellent value. At this age condition decides everything and the year tells you very little.
How much fuel does a Johnson GT 150 use?
Considerably more than a modern four stroke doing the same work. For weekend use it rarely matters. For long hours it will outweigh the money you saved buying the engine.
Can I get parts for a Johnson GT?
For common service items, generally yes. Johnson and Evinrude shared components for decades and the aftermarket is deep. Ask about specific parts before you commit.
What should I check on a used Johnson two stroke?
Compression on every cylinder first, and the numbers should be close together. Then oil injection, gear oil for water, and whether it smokes heavily once warm.
What size boat takes a Johnson 150HP outboard?
Usually a bay boat or center console from 18 to 22 feet. Check the maximum rating on your capacity plate and the transom measurement before you order.

Shipping and crating
The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.
Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.
Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.
| Destination zone | Freight on this engine | Transit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard freight | $100 | About a week |
| Express freight | $250 | 1 to 3 days |
