Used Johnson 200HP Outboard for Sale

Buy a used Johnson 200HP two stroke outboard for sale online, a 1994 engine on a 25 inch extra long shaft with electric start, remote steering and power trim and tilt. Two hundred horsepower on an offshore shaft for this money exists only because the engine is a thirty year old two stroke from a discontinued brand, and for the right buyer that is an opportunity rather than a warning. Big two strokes are simple, light for their output and cheap to fix, and plenty are still working boats hard every season. Order it from this page, or ask us for compression figures on all six cylinders and photographs of the midsection before you decide.

Supplied with

  • Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
  • Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
  • Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
  • Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
  • First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil

Not sure on shaft length

Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is an extra long shaft, 25in.

Buy a used 200HP outboard for the price of a small one

This engine costs roughly what a good used 25 horsepower four stroke does. That comparison is the entire argument for it.

The reason is age, fuel type and badge, not a hidden defect. A 1994 two stroke from a brand that no longer exists sits at the bottom of the market regardless of how well it runs.

If you have a hull rated for 200 horsepower and a budget that does not stretch to a modern four stroke, this is how that boat gets powered. It is also considerably lighter than a four stroke at the same output, which on an older transom is a genuine advantage.

Buying a 1994 Johnson 200HP: the honest downsides

We would rather set these out than have you find them after delivery.

Fuel consumption is significantly higher than a modern four stroke. At 200 horsepower run regularly, that is real money every season.

It is loud, and it smokes on start up, which is normal and still noticeable.

Emissions rules restrict older two strokes on some waters, which is worth checking for where you boat before you buy.

Resale is weak. You are buying at the bottom of the market, which also means you are not going to lose much more.

What a 25 inch 200HP outboard fits

Offshore singles and heavier center consoles from about 22 to 26 feet with a 25 inch transom.

Measure from the top of the transom straight down to the hull bottom at the centerline before ordering. If you measure 20 inches, this is the wrong engine, and the Johnson GT 150 is a long shaft alternative at lower output.

Why a Johnson 200HP two stroke is lighter on the transom

One genuine benefit of an older two stroke at this output that rarely gets mentioned, and on the right boat it matters.

A two stroke at 200 horsepower is considerably lighter than a modern four stroke of the same rating. On a hull built in the era when two strokes were standard, that is what the transom was designed around.

Repowering such a boat with a heavy four stroke can sit the stern deeper than the designer intended, which changes how it floats, how it planes and how it handles a following sea.

So on an older hull, a two stroke replacement is not just the cheap option. It can be the correct one.

Tell us the boat and we will tell you honestly whether that applies to yours or whether the four stroke is still the better answer.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this 200HP outboard so cheap?

Because it is a thirty year old two stroke from a discontinued brand. Those three things set the price, not a hidden fault. Ask for compression figures and judge it on those.

Are older Johnson two strokes restricted on some waters?

Some waters restrict older two strokes on emissions grounds. Check the rules where you boat before buying, because it varies considerably by state and by individual lake.

Is a Johnson 200HP two stroke lighter than a four stroke?

Yes, meaningfully at this output. On an older transom that weight difference can be an advantage rather than just a statistic.

What should I check before buying?

Compression on all cylinders and how close they are to each other, the oil injection system, the gear oil for water, and the midsection and trim rams for thirty years of weather.

Will this 25 inch Johnson 200HP fit my boat?

Only if the transom measures about 25 inches from the top down to the hull bottom at the centerline. A 20 inch transom needs a long shaft engine instead.
