Used Johnson 25HP Outboard for Sale

Buy a used Johnson 25HP outboard for sale online, a four stroke on a 15 inch short shaft with electric start and tiller steering. Twenty five horsepower is where a small boat stops being slow: it plane a jon boat or a light skiff properly, and with electric start it does it without a pull cord that gets harder to swing every year. This is the configuration most small aluminum hulls want, and Johnson being discontinued is what keeps the price where it is rather than anything about the engine. Order this Johnson 25 from the page, or ask us for compression figures and photographs before you decide.

Supplied with

  • Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
  • Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
  • Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
  • Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
  • First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil

Not sure on shaft length

Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a short shaft, 15in.

Why electric start matters at 25HP

At 6 or 9.9 horsepower a recoil start is nothing. At 25 it is a real pull, and it gets less appealing every season.

Electric start on a tiller engine removes that entirely, and it is the single upgrade small boat owners say they notice most. It needs a battery on board, which most boats this size have anyway for lights and a fish finder.

It also means you can restart quickly after drifting or shutting down, which on a fishing boat happens more often than you would think.

Boats that suit a 25HP electric start tiller

Jon boats, small aluminum fishing hulls, light skiffs and inflatables. It is enough to plane a small boat with two people aboard, which a 15 will struggle to do.

A 15 inch short shaft points at a jon boat or a low transom hull. Measure before you order, because at this size getting the shaft length wrong is more noticeable than at 6 horsepower.

Buying a used Johnson at this size

The brand being discontinued is why this engine costs what it does, and for a boat used at weekends that is a sensible trade.

Ask about parts for the specific model before you commit. For common Johnsons the aftermarket is deep, and components were shared with Evinrude for decades, so most service items are straightforward.

Also compare it with the Johnson 9.9HP if the boat is smaller, or browse Johnson outboard motors for the rest.

Fitting a Johnson 25HP tiller to a small transom

This is a 15 inch short shaft engine, which is the right length for a lot of small boats and the wrong one for others, so measure before you order.

Take the measurement at the centerline, from the top of the transom straight down to the lowest point of the hull. Jon boats and many small aluminum hulls come in around 15 inches, which is what this suits.

If you measure 20, the propeller on this engine will sit too high, ventilate in turns and lose bite exactly when you need it. That is the dangerous error of the two and it is not worth risking.

The other thing to check is the transom thickness and whether the existing bolt holes line up. Send us the hull model and the measurement and we will confirm the fit.

Frequently asked questions

Is electric start worth it on a 25HP outboard?

Most owners think so. At 25 horsepower a recoil start is a genuine pull, and electric start removes it entirely. It needs a battery aboard, which most boats this size already have.

What size boat is a 25HP outboard for?

Jon boats, small aluminum fishing hulls, light skiffs and inflatables. It will plane a small boat with two people aboard, which a 15 usually will not.

Can I still get parts for a Johnson 25?

For common models, yes. The aftermarket is deep and Johnson shared components with Evinrude for decades. Ask us about this specific engine before you buy.

What year is this Johnson 25HP?

The listing did not state one, so none is claimed here. We read it from the serial number and confirm it before the engine ships.

Will a 15 inch Johnson 25HP fit my jon boat?

Many jon boats take 15 inches, but measure rather than assume. Top of the transom straight down to the hull bottom at the centerline, and send us the figure.

Shipping and crating

The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.

Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.

Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.

Warranty

This used Johnson is compression tested, run on the dyno and listed with its hour count and service history. It carries a ninety day parts and labor warranty from us unless the balance of factory cover runs longer.

Warranty work can be carried out at any authorized Johnson dealer in the United States. You are not tied to us for servicing, and buying online does not shorten or void the factory cover.

The serial number on this listing, J45-5540087, is the unit that ships to you. It appears on your invoice and on the warranty registration.

3 years, extendable to 5 years

Extended service cover can be added within the first year. Ask the sales desk to add it to your invoice.
