Used Mercury 9.9HP Outboard for Sale

Buy a used Mercury 9.9HP outboard for sale online, a 2002 four stroke on a 20 inch long shaft with tiller steering and manual pull start. Nine point nine horsepower is the most useful number in small outboards, because it slips under the 10 horsepower cap that applies on a great many inland waters while giving you everything those rules allow. This one is a long shaft, which suits sailboat tenders and boats with a standard transom, and it works equally well as a kicker motor on a bigger boat. Order it from the page, or ask us for compression figures and photographs of anything you want to see before you decide.

Supplied with

  • Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
  • Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
  • Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
  • Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
  • First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil

Not sure on shaft length

Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.

Why buy a 9.9HP outboard

The rating exists for regulatory reasons, and those reasons are why this size is worth owning.

Many inland lakes and rivers cap engine power at 10 horsepower. Plenty of small boat licensing and insurance thresholds sit at the same figure. A 9.9 gives you the maximum the rules allow without crossing any line.

That makes 9.9s the most liquid size in the small outboard market. They sell quickly, hold value and are worth buying used because a good one will always find another owner.

Using a Mercury 9.9HP as a kicker motor

Half the 9.9s sold are not the main engine on anything. They are kickers, mounted alongside a larger outboard on a bigger boat.

They do two jobs there. They troll at speeds a big engine cannot hold steadily, which matters for salmon, walleye and anything else caught slowly. And they get you home if the main engine stops, which on a big water fishery is worth the transom space by itself.

A 20 inch long shaft is usually right for a kicker, because the bracket mounts it higher than the main engine sits.

Buying a 2002 small outboard

The year matters far less than the storage. Small four strokes gum up when they sit with fuel in them, and that is what ends most of them.

Compression is the number that decides it and we record it before listing. Ask for the figures and for photographs of the fuel system and the prop.

Compare with the new Mercury 8HP if you would rather have warranty, or browse portable outboard motors for more at this size.

Fitting a Mercury 9.9HP on a kicker bracket

If this engine is going alongside a larger one rather than on its own transom, the bracket matters as much as the motor.

It has to hold the weight without flexing, and it has to sit at a height that keeps the prop in the water when the boat is trimmed for the main engine. A kicker mounted too high ventilates the moment there is any chop.

Most brackets mount higher than the main engine, which is why a 20 inch shaft is usually right for kicker duty where a 15 would be right on the same transom for a primary engine.

Steering linkage between the two is worth considering too, so you are not reaching back to aim the kicker while trying to watch the water. Tell us the boat and the main engine and we will say what the setup needs.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this rated 9.9HP and not 10?

Because many inland waters cap engine power at 10 horsepower, and various licensing and insurance thresholds sit at the same number. A 9.9 gives you the most the rules allow.

Can a Mercury 9.9HP be used as a kicker motor?

A small outboard mounted alongside a larger one on a bigger boat. It trolls at speeds the main engine cannot hold and gets you home if that engine stops. A 9.9 is the classic size.

Is a 2002 outboard too old to buy?

Not if the compression is good and it was stored properly. Small four strokes are killed by sitting with old fuel in them, so storage history matters far more than the year.

What boats take a 9.9HP outboard?

Jon boats, small aluminum hulls, dinghies and sailboat auxiliaries, plus kicker duty on a larger boat. A 20 inch long shaft suits tenders and kicker brackets.

Does this Mercury 9.9HP have electric start?

No, manual recoil. At 9.9 horsepower that is a real pull but manageable, and it saves needing a battery on board.

Shipping and crating

The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.

Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.

Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.

Warranty

This used Mercury is compression tested, run on the dyno and listed with its hour count and service history. It carries a ninety day parts and labor warranty from us unless the balance of factory cover runs longer.

Warranty work can be carried out at any authorized Mercury dealer in the United States. You are not tied to us for servicing, and buying online does not shorten or void the factory cover.

The serial number on this listing, 2B4-1428095, is the unit that ships to you. It appears on your invoice and on the warranty registration.

3 years, extendable to 8 years

Extended service cover can be added within the first year. Ask the sales desk to add it to your invoice.
