Used 2023 Mercury 50HP Outboard for Sale
Buy a used Mercury 50HP tiller outboard for sale online, a 2023 four stroke with 19 recorded hours on a 20 inch long shaft. This is a tiller steered engine with electric start and power trim and tilt, which is the configuration jon boats, duck boats and small aluminum hulls are repowered with when the owner wants the deck clear and the engine in hand. Nineteen hours means it has barely been run. Fifty horsepower is the practical top of the tiller band for most people, and finding one on a recent model year with almost no use is unusual. Order this Mercury 50 tiller outboard from the page, or send your transom measurement and hull model and we will confirm the fit before you pay.
Supplied with
- Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
- Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
- Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
- Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
- First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil
Not sure on shaft length
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.
Buy a Mercury 50HP tiller outboard: why tiller at this size
Fifty horsepower is where tiller steering stops being the obvious choice and becomes a deliberate one, and the people who choose it have good reasons.
A tiller engine leaves the whole center of the boat open. On a jon boat, a duck boat or a shallow water hull, that deck space is the point of the boat, and a console eats it. Standing at the stern with the engine in your hand also gives better control in skinny water than any helm position does.
The other half of it is cost. No control box, no cables, no harness and no console is real money saved, and there is less to go wrong in ten years time.
What you give up is weather protection and comfort on a long run. If the boat crosses open water regularly, remote is the better answer, and we have the Mercury 50HP with remote steering as well.
Mercury 50HP specs on this tiller outboard
| Specification | This Mercury 50 |
|---|---|

| Output | 50 horsepower at the propeller shaft |

Power trim and tilt on a tiller engine is worth noting: at 50 horsepower the engine is heavy enough that tilting it by hand is a job, and this one does it on a switch.
What boats take a 50HP tiller outboard
Jon boats, duck boats, small aluminum fishing hulls and shallow water skiffs. Anything where the deck matters more than the helm and where the boat is run standing or sitting at the stern.
A 20 inch shaft points at a hull with a standard transom rather than the shorter jon boat transoms that take 15 inches. Measure from the top of the transom straight down to the hull bottom at the centerline before you order.

Tiller engines at 50 horsepower are a narrower market than remote, so what a local yard happens to hold is even less likely to match what you need.

Frequently asked questions
Is 50HP too big for a tiller outboard?
No, it is close to the practical ceiling for most people but well within it. Above about 60 horsepower the steering loads and the transom weight push most buyers to remote. At 50 with power trim, a tiller is comfortable.
Is a Mercury 50HP tiller cheaper than remote?
Usually yes on the same engine, because there is no control box, no cables, no harness and no console to buy. Those parts cost real money when bought separately.
Is 19 hours low for a 2023 Mercury 50?
Very low. That is barely run in on an engine rated to run for thousands of hours. The thing to ask about a low hour engine of any age is storage: whether it sat with old fuel in it.
Can I convert this Mercury 50 to remote steering?
Only with a control box, cables, harness and a console, and the cost of that usually exceeds the price difference between a tiller and a remote engine. Buy the configuration you want.
Will a 20 inch Mercury 50HP fit my jon boat?
Many jon boats take 15 inches, so measure before you order. From the top of the transom straight down to the hull bottom at the centerline. Send the measurement and we will confirm.

Shipping and crating
The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.
Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.
Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.
| Destination zone | Freight on this engine | Transit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard freight | $100 | About a week |
| Express freight | $250 | 1 to 3 days |
