Buying a Mercury 5hp
Expect 25 to 29 kg, 55 to 64 lb dry, short or long shaft, manual start, tiller, and integral plus external tank fitting. Read the suffix: E is electric start, L is long shaft, PT is power trim, H is tiller. An ELPT is electric start, long shaft, power trim.

Buying used at this size, the 5hp class often has a neutral only gearbox on older units, so confirm forward and neutral both work.

Which shaft length do I need?
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. Fitted right, the anti ventilation plate finishes level with the hull bottom. Send us a photograph with a tape measure in frame if you are unsure.
Does the price include controls and a propeller?
Remote steering engines are supplied without a control box or cables unless you add them, and engines from 40hp up ship without a propeller so it can be pitched to your hull. Both can go in the same crate, so there is no second freight charge.
