Used 2003 Yamaha high thrust 9.9HP Outboard for Sale
Buy a used Yamaha 9.9HP high thrust outboard for sale online, a 2003 four stroke on a 20 inch long shaft with tiller steering and manual start. High thrust engines run a lower gear ratio and a bigger, lower pitch propeller, which is what lets a 9.9 push a sailboat or a pontoon that an ordinary small outboard would only spin against. It is an older engine, so the question is storage rather than hours: small four strokes are ended by sitting with stale fuel in them, not by running. Ask us for the compression figures. Order this used Yamaha high thrust from the page, or send the boat details and transom measurement and we will confirm the fit first.
Supplied with
- Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
- Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
- Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
- Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
- First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil
Not sure on shaft length
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.
Buying a used high thrust 9.9: what to ask
Small four strokes are rarely worn out. They are gummed up, corroded internally by ethanol fuel left standing, or seized from a winter with water in them.
None of that shows on an hour meter, and most small engines do not have one. So buying used at this size is buying somebody else maintenance habits, sight unseen.
So on an engine of this age, ask the storage questions rather than the hours questions. How it wintered matters more than how much it ran.
We record compression before listing and will send you the figures. The newer high thrust in stock is the 2016 Yamaha 9.9 high thrust.

High thrust against a standard 9.9
Buy high thrust if the boat is heavy, displacement, or has to push against current and wind: sailboats, pontoons, heavy tenders and kicker duty on a big boat.
Buy a standard 9.9 if the boat is light and you want speed: dinghies, small jon boats and anything that will plane.
Getting this wrong is the most common mistake made at this size. A high thrust engine on a light dinghy is slow, and a standard engine on a sailboat is useless in a chop. Tell us the boat and we will say which you want.
Keeping a Yamaha 9.9 high thrust alive
Worth knowing on any small engine, and worth asking about on one this age.
Ethanol fuel left standing, which draws water and turns to varnish in a carburettor. Winters with water left in a passage. Batteries left flat, on the electric start versions.
Stabilise the fuel or run the tank down before storage, change the gear oil annually, and this engine will outlast several boats. More at this size on portable outboard motors.
Checking a 2003 Yamaha 9.9 high thrust
On an engine this age the inspection is short, and it is mostly about how it spent the winters rather than the summers.
Compression by feel on the recoil, firm and even. We take proper readings before listing and will send them.
The fuel system, which on a small four stroke is where neglect shows first. Varnish in a carburettor from fuel left standing is the single most common fault on engines like this.
The gearcase, for water in the oil and for the state of the propeller shaft behind the prop.
And the high thrust propeller itself, since that is what makes the engine worth having. Ask for a photograph of it and we will send one.
Frequently asked questions
What does high thrust mean on an outboard?
A lower gear ratio and a larger, lower pitch propeller. The prop turns slower and grips more water, giving more push at low speed at the cost of top end. It is built for heavy boats.
How old is this high thrust 9.9?
It is a 2003. At this age condition decides the value rather than the year, and on a small four stroke that means compression and how it was stored. We record compression before listing.
High thrust or standard 9.9 for my boat?
High thrust for sailboats, pontoons, heavy hulls and kicker duty. Standard for dinghies and light boats that plane. Tell us the boat and we will say which.
Is a 2003 small outboard worth buying?
If the compression is good and it was stored dry, yes. High thrust gearcases are simple and Yamaha small engines run a very long time. Ask for the compression figures before deciding.
How do I stop a Yamaha 9.9 gumming up in storage?
Stabilise the fuel or run the tank down before it sits, and change the gear oil annually. Ethanol fuel left standing is what ends most small four strokes.

Shipping and crating
The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.
Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.
Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.
| Destination zone | Freight on this engine | Transit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard freight | $100 | About a week |
| Express freight | $250 | 1 to 3 days |
