Used Yamaha Midrange 40HP Outboard for Sale
Buy a used Yamaha 40HP four stroke outboard for sale online, on a 20 inch long shaft with electric start, remote steering and power trim and tilt. Forty horsepower with remote steering and power trim is a fully equipped small outboard: it is the point where the engine stops being something you wrestle and starts being something you operate. It suits aluminum fishing boats, small pontoons and light skiffs, and it is the size a lot of 20 to 25HP owners move up to once they have carried passengers a few times. Order this Yamaha 40 outboard from the page, or send the hull model and transom measurement and we will confirm the fit before you pay.
Supplied with
- Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
- Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
- Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
- Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
- First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil
Not sure on shaft length
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.
What a Yamaha 40HP with power trim gives you
Power trim is the feature people underestimate at this size, and it changes the boat more than the extra horsepower does.
It lets you tilt the engine from the helm: bow up to get on plane, bow down to hold it, and fully up to beach or trailer. On a boat that runs shallow or launches often, doing that by hand gets old immediately.
Combined with remote steering, it turns a small boat into something you drive rather than something you manage. That is the real difference between this and a 25HP tiller engine, more than the fifteen horsepower.

Is a Yamaha 40HP enough for your boat
Forty horsepower plane a 14 to 16 foot aluminum boat with two people aboard, and pushes a small pontoon at a sensible pace.
Where it runs short is with four people and gear, or on a pontoon above about 18 feet. If that is your use, look at 50 or 60 horsepower instead.
The capacity plate on your transom sets the ceiling. Aim within about ten percent of the maximum rating, because an underpowered hull works the engine harder and burns more fuel than a correctly rated one.
Buying a used Yamaha at this size
Yamaha small and midrange four strokes hold value better than any other brand, which cuts both ways: you pay more to buy one and you get more back when you sell it.
Ask for the ECU hour reading and compression on all cylinders. Ask whether it ran in salt and whether it was flushed. Those three answers cover almost everything that matters on an engine this size.
The rest of the Yamaha range is on Yamaha outboard motors.
Choosing between a Yamaha 40, 50 and 60
These three sizes overlap on the same boats and the difference is not always obvious from the numbers, so here is the practical version.
A 40 plane a light hull with one or two aboard and is the cheapest to buy and run. It starts to struggle once you load the boat.
A 50 handles a loaded 16 foot aluminum boat comfortably and is the most common repower in the band.
A 60 gives margin: it gets a heavy hull or a small pontoon up without working, and it is the one to choose if you regularly carry passengers and gear.
The capacity plate sets the ceiling. Within it, buy the largest you can rather than the smallest that will do, because an engine working near its limit wears faster and burns more.
Frequently asked questions
Is power trim worth having on a Yamaha 40HP?
Yes, and it changes the boat more than the horsepower does. Tilting from the helm to get on plane, hold trim and beach or trailer is something you notice every single trip.
What size boat needs a Yamaha 40HP outboard?
A 14 to 16 foot aluminum fishing boat with two aboard, or a small pontoon. Four people and gear, or a pontoon over 18 feet, wants 50 or 60 horsepower.
Yamaha 40HP remote or tiller: which should I buy?
Remote if the boat has a console or you run any distance. Tiller if the deck space matters more and the trips are short. This engine is the remote steering configuration.
How many hours are on this Yamaha 40HP?
The listing did not state a figure. We read it from the engine before it ships and will send you that reading along with compression on every cylinder.
Do Yamaha outboards hold their value?
Better than any other brand. That means paying more to buy one and getting more back when you sell, which matters most if you change boats every few years.

Shipping and crating
The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.
Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.
Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.
