Used Yamaha F80TLRZ 80HP Outboard for Sale
Buy a used Yamaha F80 80HP four stroke outboard for sale online, a 2001 F80TLRZ on a 20 inch long shaft with 90 recorded hours, electric start, remote steering and power trim and tilt. Ninety hours on a twenty four year old engine is the headline and the thing to think hardest about: this motor has barely run, and how it spent the decades it was not running matters more than the number on the meter. We will tell you what we know. Eighty horsepower is a useful size that sits between the 70 and the 90 bands, and at this price it is one of the cheapest ways to put a four stroke on a mid size aluminum hull. Ask us for compression figures before you order.
Supplied with
- Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
- Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
- Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
- Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
- First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil
Not sure on shaft length
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.
A Yamaha F80 with 90 hours in twenty four years
A low hour reading on an old engine is not automatically good news, and we would rather say so than let the number sell it for us.
Outboards suffer from standing. Fuel goes stale and turns to varnish in a carburettor. Seals dry out and harden. Batteries sulphate. Water left in a passage over a freezing winter splits what it is sitting in. None of that shows up on an hour meter.
So the questions on this engine are about storage rather than wear. How was it kept, was it run periodically, was it winterised, was the fuel stabilised.
Compression is the number that cuts through all of it, and we record it before listing. Ask for the figures on all four cylinders and judge the engine on those rather than on the hours.

TLRZ is a Yamaha configuration code covering shaft length, steering and rigging rather than a distinct engine.
What boats a Yamaha F80 suits
Aluminum fishing boats from 17 to 19 feet, pontoons to about 22 feet and light skiffs. It sits between the 70 and 90 bands and suits hulls rated for either.
Check the maximum rating on your capacity plate before ordering. Eighty horsepower on a hull rated for 70 is not legal, and on one rated for 115 it is leaving performance on the table.
Is a 2001 four stroke worth buying
Early four strokes get a mixed reputation and some of it is deserved, but Yamaha was further along than most by 2001 and these engines have held up.
At this price, with compression figures that check out, it is one of the cheapest routes to four stroke economy and quietness on a mid size boat.
What it will not have is any modern digital gauge compatibility, so expect analogue instruments. More at this size on Yamaha outboard motors.
Bringing a stored Yamaha F80 back into service
An engine that has barely run in twenty four years needs a specific sort of attention before it earns your trust, and it is worth budgeting for.
Fuel system first. Anything left in a carburettor or a line for years turns to varnish, and cleaning or rebuilding is the usual price of a long sleep.
Then the rubber. Impellers, fuel lines and seals harden with age rather than with use, so a water pump kit is sensible regardless of what the meter says.
Then the electrics: a battery, terminals and a charging check.
None of that is expensive against what the engine costs, and once it is done you have a four stroke with almost all of its running life intact. Ask us what has already been done to this one.
Frequently asked questions
Is 90 hours good on a 2001 Yamaha F80?
It means the engine barely ran, which is not automatically good. Standing causes stale fuel, hardened seals and freeze damage, none of which shows on a meter. Judge it on compression figures instead.
What should I ask about a low hour used Yamaha?
How it was stored, whether it was run periodically, whether it was winterised and whether the fuel was stabilised. Then ask for compression on every cylinder, which is the number that settles it.
What does TLRZ mean on a Yamaha F80TLRZ?
It is a configuration code covering shaft length, steering and rigging, not a different engine. It matters when comparing listings that look otherwise identical.
What size boat takes a Yamaha 80HP outboard?
A 17 to 19 foot aluminum fishing boat, a pontoon to about 22 feet, or a light skiff. Check the maximum rating on your capacity plate before ordering.
Are early four strokes worth buying?
Yamaha was further along than most by 2001 and these have held up. Expect analogue gauges rather than digital compatibility, and judge the individual engine on compression and storage history.

Shipping and crating
The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.
Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.
Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.
| Destination zone | Freight on this engine | Transit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard freight | $100 | About a week |
| Express freight | $250 | 1 to 3 days |
