Used Evinrude 70HP Outboard for Sale
Buy a used Evinrude 70HP two stroke outboard for sale online, on a 20 inch long shaft with electric start, remote steering and power trim and tilt. Sixty horsepower with remote steering is the standard aluminum boat and pontoon repower, and a two stroke does it lighter and cheaper than the four strokes that replaced it. On an older aluminum hull that weight difference is worth having rather than just worth noting. Evinrude is discontinued, which is what puts this engine at this price rather than anything about how it runs. Order it from this page, or ask us for compression figures on every cylinder and photographs before you decide.
Supplied with
- Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
- Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
- Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
- Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
- First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil
Not sure on shaft length
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.
Why buy an Evinrude 70HP two stroke for an aluminum boat
Weight is the argument, and on a small aluminum hull it is a real one.
A two stroke at 70 horsepower is meaningfully lighter than a four stroke of the same output. On a 16 or 17 foot aluminum boat that changes how the stern sits at rest, how quickly the hull comes onto plane and how the boat handles with people in the back.
The cost is fuel and noise. A two stroke burns more and sounds like it, and if the boat runs long hours that difference adds up across a season.
For a boat used at weekends, the lighter engine and lower purchase price usually win.

A note on the rating. The cowling on this engine carries a 60 decal, but the riveted identification plate reads model E70TLCRD and MAX. HORSEPOWER 70 AT 5000 R.P.M. The plate is the engine, so it is listed and priced as a 70. Cowlings get swapped between engines of this age and this one has been. The plate is photographed on this page so you can read it yourself, and the serial number goes on your invoice.
The model year was not stated on this listing and is confirmed from the serial number before the engine ships.
Checking a used two stroke before you buy
Compression first, on every cylinder, and the readings should be close together. A single low cylinder is the expensive fault on any two stroke.
Then the oil system: whether injection works or it has been converted to premix. Either is fine, but you need to know which you are buying and so does whoever services it.
Then the ordinary checks any engine gets: gear oil for water, midsection and trim rams for corrosion, and whether it smokes heavily once warm.
We record compression before listing and will send the figures with photographs of anything you want to see.
What a 70HP outboard suits
Aluminum fishing boats from 16 to 18 feet, pontoons to about 20 feet, and small runabouts. Check the capacity plate on your transom before ordering.
The nearest four strokes we hold are a size down, the Suzuki 60HP new and the Mercury 60HP used, and both weigh more than this two stroke does at seventy. The rest of the two stroke stock is on 2 stroke outboard motors.
What rigging an Evinrude 70HP remote engine needs
A remote steering engine is not complete without the parts that let you drive it, and on a used purchase those are the question to settle first.
A control box, either side mount or binnacle, matched to the engine. Cables for throttle and shift, cut to the right length for your boat. A wiring harness. A key switch and a kill cord. Gauges, if you want to see what the engine is doing.
Bought separately, that list is a significant fraction of what a used engine at this size costs. Included with the engine, it is most of the job done.
Ask us what comes with this one before you compare it against anything else, and we will list it rather than leave you to assume.
Frequently asked questions
Is a two stroke 70HP lighter than a four stroke?
Yes, meaningfully. On a 16 to 18 foot aluminum hull that affects how the stern sits, how quickly the boat planes and how it handles with weight in the back.
How much fuel does an Evinrude 70HP two stroke use?
Noticeably more than a four stroke doing the same work. For weekend use it rarely outweighs the lower purchase price. For long hours, it will.
What should I check on a used Evinrude two stroke?
Compression on every cylinder and how close the readings are to each other, the oil injection system, gear oil for water, and whether it smokes heavily once warm.
Can I still get Evinrude parts?
For common models, generally yes. BRP committed to service parts and the aftermarket is deep because Evinrude and Johnson shared components for decades.
What size boat needs a 70HP outboard?
Usually a 16 to 18 foot aluminum fishing boat, a pontoon to about 20 feet, or a small runabout. Check the maximum rating on your capacity plate.

Shipping and crating
The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.
Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.
Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.
| Destination zone | Freight on this engine | Transit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard freight | $100 | About a week |
| Express freight | $250 | 1 to 3 days |
