Used Yamaha F70 70HP Outboard for Sale

Buy a used Yamaha F70 70HP four stroke outboard for sale online, a 2016 engine on a 20 inch long shaft with 200 recorded hours, electric start, remote steering and power trim and tilt. Two hundred hours across nine seasons is light weekend use on an engine rated to run past 3,000, which is the main reason to look at this one rather than the older F70 we also hold. The F70 is the light one in its class, which is what makes it the engine of choice on aluminum hulls and on boats repowering away from a two stroke. Order it from the page, or send us your hull model and transom measurement and we will confirm the fit before you pay.

Supplied with

  • Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
  • Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
  • Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
  • Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
  • First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil

Not sure on shaft length

Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.

Two Yamaha F70s in stock: choosing between them

We hold two F70s, three years apart, and the difference between them is worth laying out.

This one is 2016 with a documented 200 hours. The other is the 2013 Yamaha F70LA, older, with no hour reading stated on the listing.

Documented hours are worth paying for. Not because 200 is a magic number, but because knowing is worth more than guessing when you are buying an engine you cannot inspect in person.

Ask us for compression on both and we will send you the figures side by side. That is a better basis for choosing than the year.

Why buy a Yamaha F70 rather than a 60 or a 90

Seventy sits in a useful gap. It gives a loaded 17 or 18 foot aluminum boat noticeably more than a 60 without the weight and cost of a 90.

On a pontoon it is the difference between carrying six people comfortably and carrying four. On a fishing hull it is the margin that keeps the boat on plane when the wind gets up.

The capacity plate on your transom sets the ceiling, so check it before deciding. Aim within about ten percent of the maximum rating.

What to ask before you order

Compression on all four cylinders, which we record before listing. Whether the engine ran in salt and whether it was flushed. Whether controls, harness and propeller are included.

Those three answers change the value of a used outboard more than anything else on the page, and we will put all of them in writing.

Browse the rest on Yamaha outboard motors or the band on 4-stroke outboard motors.

Reading the hours on a used Yamaha F70

Two hundred hours means something specific on a Yamaha, and it is worth knowing what the number does and does not tell you.

The ECU records running time, not distance and not load. An engine that spent those hours trolling at low revs has done very different work from one that spent them at wide open throttle, and the meter treats them identically.

Yamaha ECUs also log time spent in different engine speed bands on many models, which a dealer can read. That is a far better picture of how the engine lived than the total alone.

Ask us for that breakdown as well as the total. On a used engine it is one of the few pieces of evidence that cannot be talked around.

Frequently asked questions

Is 200 hours high for a 2016 Yamaha F70?

No, that is light weekend use across nine seasons. On a four stroke rated past 3,000 hours it leaves the great majority of the engine unspent.

Which of the two F70s should I buy?

This one has a documented 200 hours; the 2013 has no stated reading. Knowing is worth something when you cannot inspect in person. Ask us for compression figures on both and compare those.

Is a Yamaha F70 enough for a pontoon?

For a pontoon to about 20 feet carrying a normal family load, generally yes. Larger or heavily loaded pontoons want 90 if the transom is rated for it.

Why is the F70 considered a good engine?

It is light for its output, which matters on aluminum hulls and on boats repowering from a two stroke where a heavy four stroke would sit the stern too deep.

Does this Yamaha F70 come with controls and a propeller?

Ask before ordering. Remote engines need a control box, cables and a harness, and what is included changes the real cost of the repower considerably.

Shipping and crating

The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.

Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.

Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.

Warranty

This used Yamaha is compression tested, run on the dyno and listed with its hour count and service history. It carries a ninety day parts and labor warranty from us unless the balance of factory cover runs longer.

Warranty work can be carried out at any authorized Yamaha dealer in the United States. You are not tied to us for servicing, and buying online does not shorten or void the factory cover.

The serial number on this listing, 6EK-5466872, is the unit that ships to you. It appears on your invoice and on the warranty registration.

3 years, extendable to 5 years

Extended service cover can be added within the first year. Ask the sales desk to add it to your invoice.
