Used Yamaha 90 SHO 90HP Outboard for Sale
Buy a used Yamaha 90 SHO outboard for sale online, a 2021 90HP four stroke on a 20 inch long shaft with 100 recorded hours, electric start, remote steering and power trim and tilt. SHO stands for Super High Output, and it is not decoration: these engines make their power differently from the standard four strokes at the same rating, with acceleration aimed at light fast hulls rather than at pushing weight. Ninety horsepower with 100 hours on a four year old engine is close to unused. If your boat is a bass, bay or flats hull rather than a loaded pontoon, this is the 90 you want. Order it from the page, or send your hull details and transom measurement first.
Supplied with
- Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
- Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
- Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
- Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
- First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil
Not sure on shaft length
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.
What SHO means on a Yamaha outboard
Super High Output, and the difference from a standard four stroke at the same horsepower is real rather than a badge.
SHO engines are built around acceleration and top end on light hulls. They are the Yamaha answer to the two strokes that bass and flats boats ran before emissions rules took them away, and they were designed to match that character in a four stroke.
What that means on the water is hole shot: the boat gets up and going quickly, which on a light hull is most of what the owner cares about.
What it does not mean is more torque for pushing a heavy loaded pontoon. For that job a standard four stroke at the same rating is the better engine. Buy SHO for light and fast.

Is 100 hours low on a Yamaha 90 SHO
Yes, genuinely. That is roughly twenty five hours a season on an engine rated to run past 3,000, which is a boat used a handful of times a year.
The caveat on any low hour engine is how it spent the time it was not running. Ask whether it was stored with stabilised fuel and whether it was serviced on schedule regardless of use. Both answers exist for this one.
Compression on all cylinders is recorded before listing and we will send you the figures.
What boats run a 90 SHO
Bass boats, bay boats, flats hulls and light aluminum boats where acceleration matters more than load carrying.
On a heavy pontoon the standard 90 is the better choice, and we stock alternatives: the Mercury 90HP, new, or the used Mercury 90HP.
Check your capacity plate and measure the transom before ordering. Twenty inches is a standard transom.
Is a Yamaha 90 SHO right for your boat
This engine is tuned for a specific kind of hull and it is worth being clear about whether yours is one, because the badge carries a premium.
It earns its keep on a light boat that needs to come out of the hole quickly: bass boats, flats skiffs, light bay hulls and performance aluminum boats. On those, the difference from a standard 90 is immediate and obvious.
On a loaded pontoon, a heavy aluminum fishing boat or anything that carries weight and cruises, a standard four stroke at the same rating does the job as well and usually costs less.
Tell us the hull and how you use it. If a standard 90 is the better engine for your boat we would rather sell you that than have you pay for tuning you will never feel.
Frequently asked questions
What does SHO mean on a Yamaha outboard?
Super High Output. The engines are built for acceleration and top end on light hulls, matching the character of the two strokes bass and flats boats used to run, in a four stroke.
Is a SHO better than a standard Yamaha 90?
On a light fast hull, yes, because hole shot is what matters there. On a heavy pontoon a standard four stroke is the better engine. They suit different boats at the same horsepower.
Is 100 hours low for a 2021 Yamaha 90 SHO?
Very. About twenty five hours a season on an engine rated past 3,000. The question on any low hour engine is storage rather than wear, so ask about fuel stabiliser and servicing.
What boats use a 90 SHO?
Bass boats, bay boats, flats hulls and light aluminum boats where acceleration matters more than carrying weight.
Will this 20 inch Yamaha 90 SHO fit my boat?
Only if the transom measures about 20 inches from the top down to the hull bottom at the centerline. Send us the hull model and the measurement and we will confirm.

Shipping and crating
The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.
Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.
Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.
| Destination zone | Freight on this engine | Transit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard freight | $100 | About a week |
| Express freight | $250 | 1 to 3 days |
