Used Yamaha F70LA 70HP Outboard for Sale

Buy a used Yamaha F70LA 70HP four stroke outboard for sale online, a 2013 engine on a 20 inch long shaft with electric start, remote steering and power trim and tilt. The F70 has a specific reputation among people who know outboards: it is unusually light for its output, which is why it turns up on boats where a heavier 70 or 75 would sit the stern too deep. On an aluminum hull or a light skiff that weight advantage is a handling difference, not a specification footnote. Order this Yamaha F70 from the page, or send the hull model and transom measurement and we will confirm the fit before you pay.

Supplied with

  • Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
  • Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
  • Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
  • Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
  • First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil

Not sure on shaft length

Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.

Why the Yamaha F70 is worth seeking out

The F70 was built to be light, and at this output that is the thing that distinguishes it.

Weight on the transom affects how a small boat sits at rest, how quickly it planes and how it behaves with people standing in the back. On a 16 to 18 foot hull, the difference between a light 70 and a heavy one is something you feel every trip.

It is also why the F70 turns up on boats whose transoms were designed around older, lighter two strokes. Replacing a two stroke with a heavy four stroke can sit the stern lower than the hull was drawn for, and a light four stroke avoids that.

If you are repowering from a two stroke, this is a model worth specifically looking for.

The LA suffix is a Yamaha configuration code covering shaft length and rigging, not a different engine. Hours were not stated and are read from the engine before dispatch.

What size boat takes a Yamaha F70

Aluminum fishing boats from 16 to 18 feet, light skiffs, and pontoons to about 20 feet. It sits between the 60 and the 90 in a band where a lot of hulls are rated.

Check the maximum rating on your capacity plate. If it allows 90, consider the step up; if it allows 60, do not fit this.

The other F70 in stock is the 2016 Yamaha F70, three years newer with 200 recorded hours.

Buying a used F70

The checks are the standard ones: compression on all four cylinders, ECU hours, salt history, and whether controls and rigging are included.

Because the F70 is sought after, the used ones do not sit long, and prices hold up better than the year alone suggests. That is worth knowing before you assume a 2013 engine should be cheap.

The rest of the range is on Yamaha outboard motors.

Why the Yamaha F70 weight matters on an aluminum hull

On a small aluminum boat the engine weight changes the hull more than the extra horsepower does, and the F70 is the clearest example of why.

Weight at the transom sets how the boat floats at rest, how far you have to trim to get on plane, and how it behaves with two people standing in the stern. Add fifty pounds and a light hull sits noticeably deeper aft.

That is why repowering from a two stroke to a heavy four stroke sometimes disappoints even when the horsepower went up: the hull is carrying more and trimming differently.

A lighter four stroke at the same output sidesteps most of it, which is the practical case for this engine over a heavier rival at the same rating.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Yamaha F70 popular?

It is unusually light for 70 horsepower, which matters on small aluminum hulls and on boats whose transoms were designed around older two strokes. That weight advantage is a handling difference, not a footnote.

What does LA mean on a Yamaha F70LA?

It is a configuration code covering shaft length and rigging, not a different engine. It matters when comparing two listings that otherwise look identical.

Is a Yamaha F70 good for repowering from a two stroke?

It is one of the better choices. Replacing a light two stroke with a heavy four stroke can sit the stern lower than the hull was designed for, and the F70 avoids most of that.

What size boat needs a Yamaha F70?

A 16 to 18 foot aluminum fishing boat, a light skiff, or a pontoon to about 20 feet. Check your capacity plate before ordering.

How many hours are on this Yamaha F70?

The listing did not state a figure. We read it from the engine before it ships and will send it with compression figures on request.

Shipping and crating

The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.

Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.

Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.
