Used Mercury Tracker 50HP Outboard for Sale
Buy a used Mercury 50HP two stroke outboard for sale online, a 2003 Tracker on a 20 inch long shaft with electric start, remote steering and power trim and tilt. Two stroke outboards are lighter, simpler and cheaper to buy than the four strokes that replaced them, and on an aluminum fishing boat those three things still count for a lot. This one came off a Tracker, which is exactly the fleet these engines were built for. Buying a used two stroke outboard is a different decision from buying a four stroke and it is worth understanding before you order. Send the hull model and transom measurement and we will confirm the fit before you pay.
Supplied with
- Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
- Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
- Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
- Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
- First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil
Not sure on shaft length
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.
Buy a used two stroke outboard: what you gain and what you give up
Two strokes were pushed out of the market by emissions rules, not by owners deciding they were bad engines, and the trade they offer has not changed.
What you gain is weight, simplicity and price. A two stroke is lighter than a four stroke at the same horsepower, which on an aluminum hull affects how the boat sits and how it planes. There is less inside it to go wrong, and a mechanic can work on one anywhere.
What you give up is fuel economy, noise and oil. A two stroke burns more, sounds like it, and needs oil mixed or injected. It also holds less value when you sell it on.
For a boat used a few weekends a year on a lake, that trade is often the right one. For a boat that runs long hours, buy the four stroke.

What to check on a used Mercury 50HP two stroke
The checks are different from a four stroke and they are mostly simpler.
- Compression on every cylinder. On a two stroke this is the single most telling number and a low cylinder is expensive.
- Whether the oil injection works, or whether it has been converted to premix. Either is fine, but you need to know which.
- The lower unit oil. Milky means water past the seals, same as any engine.
- Whether it smokes excessively once warm, which points at rings rather than at normal two stroke behaviour.
We record compression before listing and will send you the figures. Ask for photographs of anything you want to see.
Mercury 50HP two stroke for sale: what it suits
Aluminum fishing boats from 14 to 18 feet, which is precisely the Tracker fleet, plus small pontoons and utility hulls.
The lighter weight of a two stroke is an advantage on these boats, both for trailering and for how the hull sits at rest. Browse more on 2-stroke outboard motors or the four stroke alternative, the Mercury 50HP four stroke.
Mixing fuel and oil for a Mercury Tracker 50
If you have not run a two stroke before, this is the part that needs getting right, and it is not complicated once it is explained.
Some two strokes inject oil automatically from a tank and mix it with the fuel for you. Others need it mixed by hand into the fuel at a set ratio. Both work, but you have to know which you have, because running an injected engine on premix wastes oil and running a premix engine on straight fuel destroys it.
Use a proper TC-W3 marine two stroke oil rather than anything from a car shelf. Marine oils are formulated for the load and the water cooling.
Ask us which system this engine has before you order, and we will confirm it along with whether the injection is working as it should.
Frequently asked questions
Are two stroke outboards still worth buying?
For light recreational use, often yes. They are lighter, simpler and cheaper to buy than four strokes, and a mechanic can work on one anywhere. The cost is fuel, noise, oil and lower resale.
Does a Mercury Tracker 50 need oil mixed with the fuel?
Either mixed by hand or delivered by an oil injection system, depending on the engine. Ask which this one uses before you order, because it changes how you fuel the boat.
How do I check a used Mercury two stroke outboard?
Compression on every cylinder first, then the oil injection system, the gear oil for water, and whether it smokes heavily once warm. Compression is the number that matters most.
Is a Mercury 50HP two stroke lighter than a four stroke?
Yes, meaningfully so at the same horsepower. On an aluminum fishing boat that affects how the hull sits and how easily it planes, which is one of the reasons these engines still have a following.
What boats used the Mercury Tracker 50?
Aluminum fishing boats in the 14 to 18 foot range, most obviously Tracker hulls. It is the classic lake and river fishing setup.

Shipping and crating
The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.
Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.
Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.
| Destination zone | Freight on this engine | Transit |
