Used Mercury 50HP Outboard for Sale
Buy a used Mercury 50HP outboard for sale online, a four stroke on a 20 inch long shaft with electric start, remote steering and power trim and tilt. Fifty horsepower with remote steering is the standard repower for aluminum fishing boats, small pontoons and runabouts: enough to plane a loaded hull, light enough not to trouble the transom, and cheap enough to run that the fuel bill is not a consideration. A Mercury 50 outboard also brings the widest dealer service network in the country with it, which is what you want on an engine you intend to keep. Order it from this page, or send the hull model and transom measurement and we will confirm the fit before you pay.
Supplied with
- Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
- Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
- Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
- Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
- First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil
Not sure on shaft length
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.
Buy a used Mercury 50HP outboard with remote steering
Remote steering is what you want the moment the boat has a console, and at 50 horsepower most boats do.
It puts you forward of the engine, out of the weather and in a seat, which on anything longer than a short run is a different experience from holding a tiller arm. It also frees the stern for fishing or for weight you would rather have aft.
What comes with it is a control box, cables and a harness, all of which have to match the engine. Ask us what this listing includes before you order, because that answer changes the real cost of the repower more than anything else on the page.
If the boat has no console and you want the deck clear, the 2023 Mercury 50HP tiller is the same output the other way round.

What size boat is a Mercury 50HP outboard for
Aluminum fishing boats from about 14 to 18 feet, small pontoons, and light runabouts. Fifty horsepower plane a loaded 16 foot aluminum hull comfortably and is well within what most transoms of that size are rated for.
Check the capacity plate before you order. Underpowering a hull costs more in fuel and wear than the horsepower you saved, and overpowering one is not legal.
Why buy a Mercury: dealer coverage
At this size the engine will probably outlast your interest in the boat, so the question is who services it for the next decade.
Mercury has the densest dealer network in the United States. A water pump, an impeller or a diagnostic session is a short drive rather than a project, and parts are available everywhere. Shop the range on Mercury outboards for sale.
What propeller a Mercury 50HP needs
Whatever propeller came with a used engine was pitched for somebody else boat, and there is no reason it should suit yours.
Pitch is the number that matters. It decides whether the engine can reach its rated revs with your hull and your usual load. Too much and the engine labors permanently, runs hot and burns fuel. Too little and it hits the limiter before the boat is up to speed.
Material comes next. Aluminum is cheaper and forgiving of the odd gravel strike. Stainless holds its shape better and costs more, and is worth it on a boat that gets used hard.
Send us the boat length, the weight you normally carry and what you use it for, and we will tell you what pitch to run rather than leaving you to work it out at the ramp.
Frequently asked questions
What size boat needs a 50HP outboard?
Typically a 14 to 18 foot aluminum fishing boat, a small pontoon or a light runabout. Check the maximum rating on your capacity plate and stay at or below it.
Does this Mercury 50 come with controls?
Ask before you order. Remote engines need a control box, cables and a harness, and whether they are included changes the real cost considerably. We confirm it in writing.
What year is this Mercury 50HP?
The listing did not state one, so none is claimed here. We read it from the serial number and confirm it before you order.
Remote or tiller for a 50HP outboard?
Remote if the boat has a console or crosses open water. Tiller if the deck space matters more and the runs are short. Both are in stock at this output.
Are Mercury parts easy to get?
Yes. Mercury has the widest dealer coverage of any outboard brand in the United States, which matters most on an engine you plan to keep for years.

Shipping and crating
The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.
Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.
Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.
| Destination zone | Freight on this engine | Transit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard freight | $100 | About a week |
| Express freight | $250 | 1 to 3 days |
