Used Yamaha 50HP Outboard for Sale
Buy a used Yamaha 50HP four stroke outboard for sale online, a 2008 engine on a 20 inch long shaft with electric start, remote steering and power trim and tilt. Fifty horsepower is the standard repower for 15 to 17 foot aluminum fishing boats and small pontoons, and a Yamaha at this size is the engine people keep for fifteen years. Buying a 2008 four stroke is buying into a generation that had already solved the problems early four strokes had, at a price that reflects the year rather than the condition. Order this Yamaha 50 outboard from the page, or send us the hull model and the transom measurement and we will confirm the fit before you pay.
Supplied with
- Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
- Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
- Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
- Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
- First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil
Not sure on shaft length
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.
Buying a 2008 four stroke outboard
Four strokes took over from two strokes across the 2000s, and the engines from the back half of that decade are the ones worth buying used.
By 2008 the fuel systems, charging and corrosion protection were sorted. What you get is a mature design at a price set by the calendar rather than by how well it works.
The things to check are unchanged: compression on all cylinders, the ECU hours, whether it lived in salt, and whether it was flushed. We record compression before listing and will send you the figures.
Seventeen years is not old for a Yamaha four stroke that has been looked after. Plenty are still working every weekend.

What size boat takes a 50HP outboard
Aluminum fishing boats from about 15 to 17 feet, small pontoons and light runabouts. It plane a loaded 16 foot hull without straining.
Check the maximum rating on your capacity plate and aim within roughly ten percent of it. Underpowering costs more in fuel and wear than the horsepower you saved.
The alternatives in stock at this size are the Mercury 50HP and, a step up, the Yamaha F60.
Why a Yamaha at this size
Resale and parts. Yamaha holds value better than any other outboard brand and the dealer network is wide enough that service is rarely a problem.
On an engine you expect to keep for a decade and then sell with the boat, both of those matter more than the purchase price difference.
Browse the range on Yamaha outboard motors or the wider band on 4-stroke outboard motors.
What to check on a used Yamaha midrange
The inspection on an engine this size is straightforward, and four answers cover nearly all of the risk.
Compression on every cylinder, with the figures written down. We record them before an engine is listed.
The ECU hour reading, taken from the engine rather than quoted from a listing.
Whether it ran in salt water and whether it was flushed after use, which decides how much life is left more than the hours do.
And what comes with it, because controls, harness, propeller and gauges bought separately add a substantial amount to a repower.
Ask for all four and for photographs of the midsection, transom bracket and trim rams. We will send them before you decide.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 2008 four stroke outboard a good buy?
Yes, if it has been maintained. By the late 2000s four stroke fuel systems, charging and corrosion protection were mature, so you are buying a sorted design at a price set by the year.
How long does a Yamaha 50HP last?
Well past 3,000 hours when serviced and flushed after saltwater use. At this size the engine usually outlasts the owner interest in the boat.
What size boat needs a 50HP outboard?
A 15 to 17 foot aluminum fishing boat, a small pontoon or a light runabout. Check the maximum rating on your capacity plate before ordering.
Does this Yamaha 50HP come with controls?
Ask before you order. Remote engines need a control box, cables and a harness, and whether they are included changes the real cost of the repower.
Yamaha or Mercury at 50HP?
Yamaha for resale, Mercury for the widest service network. Both build a durable engine at this output. We stock both, so tell us the boat and how long you plan to keep it.

Shipping and crating
The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.
Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.
Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.
