Used Yamaha 6HP Outboard for Sale
Buy a used Yamaha 6HP four stroke outboard for sale online, on a 15 inch short shaft with tiller steering and manual pull start. Six horsepower is tender and dinghy power: enough to push a small boat against a modest current, light enough for one person to lift off the transom and carry to a car. Yamaha small engines are the ones people keep for twenty years and then sell for a decent price, which is worth knowing when you compare this against a cheaper badge. Order this Yamaha 6HP outboard from the page, or ask us for compression figures and photographs of anything you want to see before you decide.
Supplied with
- Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
- Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
- Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
- Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
- First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil
Not sure on shaft length
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a short shaft, 15in.
Why pay more for a small Yamaha
At six horsepower the price gap between brands is small in absolute terms, and what it buys you is resale.
Yamaha holds value better than any other outboard brand, and that is most visible at the small end where engines change hands often. A well kept Yamaha 6 will sell in a week at a price that surprises you. A cheaper badge will sit.
The engines themselves are also built to be simple and to keep running. There is very little in a small four stroke, and Yamaha has been refining theirs for a long time.
If budget is the priority rather than resale, we stock Johnson and Evinrude small engines that cost less because the badges are discontinued.

What a 6HP outboard is for
Tenders, dinghies, small inflatables, canoes and light jon boats. It will push a small boat at a useful pace and hold its own against a current, which a 2.5 or a 4 will not.
A 15 inch short shaft suits most inflatables and small tenders. Sailboat tenders usually want 20 inches, because a sailboat pitches and a short prop lifts clear of the water.
Measure from the top of the transom straight down to the hull bottom at the centerline before you order.
Checking a used Yamaha 6HP before you buy
Small engines are simple to assess and the checks take five minutes.
- Compression by feel on the recoil: firm and consistent.
- The fuel system, which is where a neglected small four stroke dies first.
- Prop shaft for fishing line damage behind the propeller.
- Gear oil for water, and how the engine was stored each winter.
We record compression before listing and will send you photographs of any part of the engine on request.
Buying a Yamaha 6HP online and having it shipped
One advantage of buying at this size that nobody mentions: a 6 horsepower outboard is easy to ship and easy to handle once it arrives.
It goes by freight rather than crated pallet, quoted by weight and destination, and it costs a fraction of what a full size engine does to move. For a lot of buyers that alone makes ordering online worth doing rather than driving to whatever a local yard happens to hold.
At the other end, one person can lift it off the pallet and carry it to a bench or a transom without help or equipment.
Send us your zip code and we will quote the freight before you order, so the delivered cost is clear rather than a surprise at checkout.
Frequently asked questions
Are Yamaha small outboards worth the extra money?
Mostly for resale. Yamaha holds value better than any other brand and small engines change hands often, so what you pay extra tends to come back. If you plan to keep it forever, a discontinued badge costs less.
What boats take a 6HP outboard?
Tenders, dinghies, small inflatables, canoes and light jon boats. It pushes a small boat properly and holds against a current, which smaller engines struggle with.
Yamaha 6HP short shaft or long shaft for a dinghy?
Most inflatables and small tenders take 15 inches. Sailboat tenders usually want 20, because the boat pitches and a short prop lifts clear. Measure the transom and send us the figure.
How do I check a used Yamaha 6HP?
Compression by feel on the recoil, the fuel system, the prop shaft for line damage, and the gear oil. Ask about storage too, because sitting kills these engines faster than running does.
Is a 6HP outboard easy to carry?
For most people, yes, as a one person lift over a short distance. That portability is the reason to choose this size over anything larger.

Shipping and crating
The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.
Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.
Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.
| Destination zone | Freight on this engine | Transit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard freight | $100 | About a week |
| Express freight | $250 | 1 to 3 days |
