Used Yamaha Midrange 70HP Outboard for Sale
Buy a used Yamaha 70HP four stroke outboard for sale online, on a 20 inch long shaft with electric start, remote steering and power trim and tilt. Seventy horsepower is the size that suits 16 to 18 foot aluminum hulls, light skiffs and pontoons, and Yamaha midrange four strokes are among the most durable engines in that band. This listing is priced well above the other 70s we hold, which we would rather explain than leave you to notice: ask us what is included with it before you compare the numbers, because at this end of the market the rigging that comes with an engine accounts for a large part of the difference. Send us the hull model and transom measurement and we will confirm the fit.
Supplied with
- Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
- Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
- Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
- Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
- First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil
Not sure on shaft length
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.
About the price on this listing
We hold three 70 horsepower Yamahas and this is by some distance the dearest. That is unusual enough to explain rather than let a buyer find it and draw their own conclusion.
Used engine prices are set by what each one cost to acquire and what came with it, not by a formula applied to output and year. An engine that arrives complete with controls, harness, gauges and a propeller is a very different package from a bare motor, and at this size that equipment is a significant part of the cost.
So before you compare this against the 2016 Yamaha F70 or the 2013 F70LA on price alone, ask us what each one includes. We will tell you straight, including if the answer is that one of the others is the better buy for you.

What boats a Yamaha 70HP outboard suits
Aluminum fishing boats from 16 to 18 feet, light skiffs and pontoons to about 20 feet. It gives a loaded hull real margin over a 60 without the weight of a 90.
Check the maximum rating on your capacity plate before you order, and measure the transom from the top straight down to the hull bottom at the centerline.
Buying a Yamaha midrange four stroke
Yamaha midrange engines have a strong reputation for running a long time with ordinary servicing, and they hold value better than any other brand at this size.
Ask for compression on all cylinders, the ECU hour reading, and whether the engine ran in salt water and was flushed. We answer all three in writing before you pay.
The rest of the range is on Yamaha outboard motors.
What to establish before ordering this one
Because this listing sits above the other 70s here, it is worth being specific about what to ask us before you commit.
What is included: controls, harness, gauges, propeller. Ask for the list rather than assuming, because on a midrange engine that equipment is a large share of the value.
The hour reading from the ECU, and compression on every cylinder, both of which we take before shipping.
The model year confirmed from the serial number rather than from the supplier export.
And whether the engine ran in salt water and was flushed after use. Those five answers will tell you whether this is the right engine of the three 70s in stock, and if it is not, we will point you at the one that is.
Frequently asked questions
Why is this Yamaha 70HP dearer than the others in stock?
Used prices are set by acquisition cost and by what comes with the engine, not by a formula on output and year. Rigging, controls and a propeller are a large part of the difference. Ask us what each listing includes.
What size boat needs a Yamaha 70HP outboard?
A 16 to 18 foot aluminum fishing boat, a light skiff, or a pontoon to about 20 feet. Check the maximum rating on your capacity plate first.
What model year is this Yamaha 70HP?
The listing carries a recent year against a used engine. We confirm it from the serial number before shipping rather than repeat an export field as fact.
How many hours are on this Yamaha 70HP?
Read from the ECU before dispatch. Ask and we will send you the figure along with compression on every cylinder.
Are Yamaha midrange four strokes reliable?
They have one of the better records in the class and hold resale better than any other brand at this size. Service history and salt exposure still decide the life of any individual engine.
