Used Yamaha VF250LA 250HP Outboard for Sale
Buy a used Yamaha VF250LA V MAX SHO 250HP outboard for sale online, on a 20 inch long shaft and shipped nationwide. The VF designation is what separates this from an ordinary F250: V MAX SHO engines were built for bass and bay boats that want hole shot and top end rather than offshore cruising economy, and they are lighter than the equivalent offshore V6. That makes a used Yamaha VF250 a different purchase from a used F250 even though both read 250 horsepower. Order it from this page, or send the transom height and hull model and we will confirm the fit before you pay. It ships crated on curbside freight with the serial number listed here.
Supplied with
- Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
- Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
- Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
- Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
- First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil
Not sure on shaft length
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.
Yamaha VF250LA or F250: what the VF badge changes
This is the question worth answering before you compare prices on any Yamaha 250 outboard for sale.
V MAX SHO engines are built around acceleration and top speed on lighter hulls. They run a different gearcase and a different propeller philosophy from the offshore F series, and they are lighter on the transom. For a bass boat, a bay boat or a flats hull, that is exactly the right trade.
The offshore F250 goes the other way: heavier, geared for pushing weight, built for long cruises with a load. On a 24 foot center console running offshore it is the better engine, and on a bass boat it is dead weight.
So do not cross shop a used VF250 against an F250 on price alone. They are aimed at different boats and the cheaper one is not automatically the better buy.

What boats take a 20 inch Yamaha 250 outboard
A 20 inch shaft at 250 horsepower points at a bass boat, a bay boat or a performance flats hull rather than an offshore console, which is consistent with the V MAX SHO badge.
Measure your transom before ordering: top of the transom straight down to the hull bottom at the centerline. Twenty inches takes this engine, twenty five needs the extra long version. The chart is on the long shaft outboard motors page.
If the boat is offshore and the transom is 25 inches, look at the 2024 Yamaha 250 V6 4.2 instead.
Buying a used Yamaha VF250 near me, or ordering online
V MAX SHO engines turn up on the used market when bass and bay boats get repowered, which is a smaller and more scattered pool than the offshore fleet. Searching Yamaha VF250 for sale near me is a long wait in most of the country.

Propping a Yamaha VF250 for hole shot
On a performance engine the propeller is not an accessory, it is half the reason you bought the engine, and the wrong one throws away what you paid for.
SHO engines are geared for acceleration, so they want a propeller that lets them get to their rated revs quickly with the boat loaded as you actually run it. Too much pitch and the engine never reaches its band, which kills the hole shot the badge is for. Too little and it screams to the limiter before the boat is up to speed.
Mounting height matters as much on a light hull. Raising the engine reduces drag and lifts the bow, and on a bass or bay boat a small change moves top end noticeably.
Tell us the hull, the load and what you use the boat for, and we will pitch it rather than guess.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a Yamaha VF250 and an F250?
The VF is a V MAX SHO, built lighter and geared for hole shot and top end on bass, bay and flats boats. The F250 is the offshore engine, heavier and geared to push a loaded hull at cruise. They suit different boats despite the same horsepower.
Is 236 hours high for a Yamaha 250?
No. A serviced four stroke at this output runs past 3,000 hours, so 236 is early life. Service records and salt exposure tell you far more than the meter does.
Will a 20 inch Yamaha 250 fit my boat?
Only if your transom measures about 20 inches from the top down to the hull bottom at the centerline. Offshore consoles usually measure 25 and need the extra long version. Send the hull model and measurement and we will confirm.
Is the Yamaha V MAX SHO a four stroke?
Yes. V MAX SHO is a four stroke performance series, not a two stroke, despite the name carrying over from Yamaha two stroke performance engines of an earlier era.
How much is a used Yamaha VF250 outboard?
It moves on hours, shaft length, rigging and salt history. V MAX SHO engines come up less often than offshore V6s, and scarcity in this configuration holds prices firmer than the hour count alone would suggest.

Shipping and crating
The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.
Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.
Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.
| Destination zone | Freight on this engine | Transit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard freight | $100 | About a week |
