Used Mercury Pro XS 250HP Outboard for Sale
Buy a used Mercury Pro XS 250HP outboard for sale online, a 2022 engine with 289 recorded hours on a 25 inch shaft. Pro XS is Mercury performance line, tuned for acceleration and top end rather than for pushing a loaded hull at cruise, and it is the engine bass boats, bay boats and fast center consoles are built around. Buying a used Mercury Pro XS 250 is not the same purchase as buying a Verado at the same output, and anyone cross shopping the two should understand the difference before comparing prices. Order it from this page, or send your hull model and transom height and we will confirm the fit first.
Supplied with
- Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
- Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
- Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
- Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
- First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil
Not sure on shaft length
Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is an extra long shaft, 25in.
Mercury Pro XS or Verado: which 250 do you want
Same manufacturer, same output, different engines for different boats, and the distinction decides which one you should be shopping.
Pro XS is the performance line. It is tuned for hole shot and top speed, geared for lighter hulls, and it is what you find on bass boats and fast bay boats where getting up and going matters more than cruising economy with a full load.
Verado is the refined line: quieter, smoother, built for boats that cruise. On a heavy offshore console that is the better engine and on a bass boat it is the wrong one.
If your boat is fast and light, a used Mercury Pro XS is the right search. If it is heavy and goes a long way, look at the Mercury Verado V8 300 instead.

Is 289 hours high on a Mercury Pro XS
No, but the question behind it is fair. Performance engines get run hard, and a Pro XS that has spent 289 hours at wide open throttle has had a different life from one that cruised.
That is what compression figures are for, and we record them on every cylinder before an engine is listed. Ask for them, and ask for the service record while you are at it.
The other thing to look at is the gearcase. Performance boats run hard in shallow water more often than offshore boats do, and the skeg and lower unit tell that story clearly. We will send photographs of both.
Buy a used Mercury Pro XS 250 online
Pro XS engines reach the used market when performance boats get repowered, which happens on a shorter cycle than offshore hulls. The supply is real but scattered, and searching Mercury Pro XS for sale near me is mostly a question of timing.
This one ships crated on curbside liftgate freight, quoted by weight and destination. The rest of the range is on Mercury outboards for sale.
Judging a used Mercury Pro XS that has been run hard
A Pro XS has usually been used the way it was built to be used, and that calls for a slightly different inspection from a cruising engine.
Compression first, and pay attention to how close the cylinders are to each other rather than only to the absolute numbers. An engine run hard should still be even.
The gearcase next. Performance boats run shallow more often than offshore boats do, so look at the skeg, the leading edge of the gearcase and the prop for impact damage and repairs.
Then the mounting holes and the transom bracket, because a hard running boat works those loads constantly.
Ask us for photographs of each, and for the service record. An engine run hard and serviced properly is a good buy; run hard and neglected is not.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Mercury Pro XS?
It is Mercury performance outboard line, tuned for acceleration and top speed on lighter, faster hulls. It differs from the Verado line, which is built for quiet cruising on heavier boats at the same horsepower.
Is the Mercury Pro XS a four stroke?
The current Pro XS engines, including this one, are four strokes. Mercury used the Pro XS badge on earlier two stroke models as well, so check what a listing is actually describing when comparing prices.
Is 289 hours a lot for a Pro XS?
Not in itself. The fair question is how those hours were run, since performance engines see more wide open throttle. Compression figures on every cylinder answer it, and we record them before listing.
What boats use a Mercury Pro XS 250?
Bass boats, fast bay boats and light center consoles where hole shot and top end matter more than cruising with a heavy load.
Pro XS or Verado for my boat?
Pro XS for light and fast, Verado for heavy and far. Tell us the hull and how you use it and we will say which line fits rather than selling you whichever is in stock.

Shipping and crating
The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.
Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.
Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.
| Destination zone | Freight on this engine | Transit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard freight | $100 | About a week |
| Express freight | $250 | 1 to 3 days |
