Used Evinrude Lighttwin 3HP Outboard for Sale

Buy a used Evinrude Lighttwin 3HP outboard for sale online, a small tiller engine on a 20 inch long shaft with manual pull start. Three horsepower is the smallest engine we stock and it does one job well: moving a light boat at displacement speed with almost nothing that can go wrong. The Lighttwin is a classic small Evinrude, the kind of engine that gets passed down rather than traded in, and at this price it is the cheapest way onto the water with a motor that runs. Order it from this page, or ask us for photographs and compression figures before you decide. It is light enough to ship easily and cheap enough to be worth the freight.

Supplied with

  • Engine, cowling and mounting hardware, factory assembled
  • Owner manual, warranty booklet and registration certificate
  • Propeller not included on engines from 40hp up, pitched to order on request
  • Remote control box, cables and rigging tube available as an add on
  • First service kit available at checkout, oil filter and gear oil

Not sure on shaft length

Measure vertically from the top of the transom to the lowest point of the hull. Fifteen inches takes a short shaft, twenty inches a long shaft, twenty five inches an extra long. This engine is a long shaft, 20in.

What an Evinrude 3HP outboard will and will not do

Three horsepower is a displacement engine. It will not plane anything, and it is not trying to.

What it does is push a dinghy, a canoe, a small tender or a light punt at walking pace to a few knots, reliably, on very little fuel. For getting from a mooring to a dock, for a tender that does a hundred yards at a time, or for a canoe on a river, it is exactly enough.

It is also light. A 3HP engine can be carried in one hand, lifted into a car boot and stored in a garage over winter without a trolley or a second person. That portability is the point of the size.

If you need to plane a small boat, this is the wrong engine and the Johnson 7.5HP or larger is where to look.

The model year was not stated on this listing. The Lighttwin name spans a long production run, so ask and we will identify it from the serial number before you order.

Buying a small used outboard: the checks

Small engines are the easiest outboards to assess, because there is very little inside them.

  • Pull the cord and feel for firm, even compression.
  • Look at the fuel system. Stale fuel and a gummed carburettor kill more small outboards than anything else.
  • Check the prop shaft for fishing line damage behind the propeller.
  • Ask how it has been stored. Sitting unused is what ends these engines, not hours.

We record compression before listing and will send you photographs of any part of the engine you ask about.

Why this Evinrude 3HP is a long shaft

A 20 inch shaft on an engine this small usually means it was bought for a sailboat tender or a boat with a higher transom than a typical dinghy.

If your boat takes 15 inches, a long shaft will still run but the gearcase hangs deeper than it needs to and costs you a little speed. Measure from the top of the transom straight down to the hull bottom at the centerline before you order.

Identifying an older Evinrude

The Lighttwin name covers a long production run, so knowing exactly which engine this is matters more than usual.

The model and serial plate carries a code that identifies the year and the exact variant, and that is what the parts suppliers work from. Without it, ordering anything is guesswork.

We will read that plate and send you a photograph of it before you order, along with what we can establish about the year.

It is worth having in your records afterwards too. Every part you buy for this engine for the rest of its life will be ordered against that number, so photograph it and keep the picture somewhere you will find it.

Frequently asked questions

What can an Evinrude 3HP outboard push?

A dinghy, a canoe, a small tender or a light punt at displacement speed. It will not plane a boat and is not meant to. For short hops and getting to a mooring it is ideal.

How much does an Evinrude Lighttwin weigh?

Yes, one handed for most people. That portability is the whole point of the size: it goes in a car, onto a shelf in a garage and back out again without help.

What year is this Evinrude Lighttwin?

The listing did not state one, and the Lighttwin name spans a long production run. We identify it from the serial number and confirm before you order.

How do I check a used Evinrude outboard before buying?

Compression by feel on the recoil, the fuel system, the prop shaft for line damage, and how it was stored. Small engines are killed by sitting, not by hours.

Can I buy a 3HP outboard online and have it shipped?

Easily. It is light enough that freight is cheap compared with a full size engine, quoted by weight and destination.

Shipping and crating

The engine is bolted upright to a purpose built pallet, braced at the cowling and skinned before it leaves the warehouse. Crates are photographed on the dock and the photographs are attached to your order record.

Freight is curbside by default. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and you will need a second pair of hands or a tractor to take the crate off the truck. Liftgate service and delivery direct to an authorized dealer can both be added at checkout.

Standard transit is five to ten working days depending on zone, express is one to three. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico are quoted separately.

Standard freight $100 About a week

Warranty

This used Evinrude is compression tested, run on the dyno and listed with its hour count and service history. It carries a ninety day parts and labor warranty from us unless the balance of factory cover runs longer.

Warranty work can be carried out at any authorized Evinrude dealer in the United States. You are not tied to us for servicing, and buying online does not shorten or void the factory cover.

The serial number on this listing, 05E-5663847, is the unit that ships to you. It appears on your invoice and on the warranty registration.
